Size variation within the family is quite dramatic. While many were medium-sized, some reached massive proportions. One notable unnamed specimen discovered in Transylvania is nicknamed "Dracula" by paleontologists. This specimen is currently on display at the Altmühltal Dinosaur Museum in Bavaria. The history of classifying these animals has changed as new fossils are found. Originally, they were classified as close relatives of Pteranodon because of their long, toothless beaks. Later, some suggested they were related to toothy ctenochasmatids, but this view is now largely obsolete. Currently, scientists agree they belong to the superfamily Azhdarchoidea. This group includes other pterosaurs like chaoyangopterids, thalassodromids, and tapejarids. In 1984, Nesov named the Azhdarchinae to include Azhdarcho, Quetzalcoatlus, and Titanopteryx (now known as Arambourgiania).
Modern studies use complex phylogenetic analyses to map the family tree. In 2021, Brian Andres recovered two different subfamilies: Azhdarchinae and Quetzalcoatlinae. The Azhdarchinae were generally smaller and closer to Azhdarcho. The Quetzalcoatlinae were much larger and closer to Quetzalcoatlus. However, a more comprehensive 2025 study by Pêgas et al. proposed an updated scheme. They preferred the name Quetzalcoatlida over Quetzalcoatlinae. This new group includes two clades: Hatzegopterygia, which are closer to Hatzegopteryx, and Quetzalcoatlini, which are closer to Quetzalcoatlus.
Recent research by Henry N. Thomas and Skye N. McDavid in 2025 further refined these relationships. Their work supported the existence of the Phosphatodraconia and Hatzegopterygia clades. They also identified a clade called Serpennata, which includes quetzalcoatlins with extremely elongate necks. This study found that Quetzalcoatlus might be polyphyletic, meaning the genus does not consist of a single group of closely related animals. Specifically, they found that Q. nothropi was sister to Thanatosdrakon. This ongoing work shows how much our understanding of pterosaurs changes with new data.
Because of these evolving studies, many animals once called azhdarchids have been reassigned. For example, Alanqa and Argentinadraco are now often placed in their own family, Alanqidae. The genus Bakonydraco is now often considered a tapejarid. Other animals like Volgadraco and Bogolubovia are now viewed as pteranodontians. Even Montanazhdarcho has been reclassified as a non-azhdarchid. These shifts demonstrate that the study of azhdarchids is a constantly changing field of science.
