Tanning (leather)

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Tanning is the special way we turn animal skins into leather. This process is very important because it changes the skin forever. It alters the protein structure of the hide to make it strong. This makes the material more durable for daily use. It also stops the skin from rotting or breaking down. Without tanning, animal skins would not last very long.

Making leather starts with a long series of steps called beamhouse operations. First, skins are cured with salt to stop bacteria from growing. Then, they are soaked in clean water to remove the salt. Workers must remove the hair, fat, and meat from the skin. They often use a lime mixture to help the hair come off. After that, they might use enzymes to soften the material. This step is called bating, and it helps make the leather feel better.

People have been working with leather for a very long time. Evidence shows that people were making leather tools 400,000 years ago in England. In the past, people used leather for many things. They made boots, sandals, and even boats out of it. Ancient people in Pakistan were tanning hides between 7000 and 3300 BCE. The Sumerians even used leather on chariot wheels around 2500 BCE.

There are two main ways to finish the tanning process today. The first way is vegetable tanning, which uses tannins from tree bark. You can find these tannins in things like oak bark or walnut shells. This method takes a long time to complete. The second way is chrome tanning, which uses chromium salts. This method was discovered after 1840 when doctors used it for medicine. Chrome tanning is much faster and can take less than one day.
