A hide is an animal skin that has been treated for human use. People use the word "hide" for skins from large animals like cows or buffalo. They use the word "skin" for smaller animals like goats, sheep, or deer.

These materials are very useful for making many things. You can find leather in shoes, clothes, bags, and belts. It is even used to cover seats in cars. Some people use skins for fashion, while others use them for tools.

Making these items involves a careful way of working. Hides are often processed while they are fresh or salted. To make them useful, people use a process called tanning. Sometimes, skins are stretched out and dried before they are tanned. Most leather comes from animals raised on farms. However, some furs come from animals like mink or rabbits that are also farmed. Other furs come from wild animals like wolves or lynx.

Humans have used animal skins for a very long time. Archaeologists believe prehistoric people used them for clothing and shelter. The Inuit people traditionally use hides for waterproof clothes and kayaks. They also use them to make summer tents. In early medieval Europe, hides helped protect wooden castles from fire. American Indian tribes have used hides for many things too. They made tepees, wigwams, and moccasins from them.

History shows us how much these materials were worth. In old England, leather was a major part of trade. A large shipment of leather might include 200 cowhides. Rabbit and squirrel skins were traded in groups of 40. Even gloves were sold in specific amounts called dickers.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, people wanted beaver hats very much. This high demand led people to explore North America. Some rare furs, like ermine, were even used by European nobles. They used the black-tipped tails to make pretty patterns on their robes.

Skins are also a big part of the world of music. Many traditional drums use natural skins to make sound. For example, the Chinese sanxian is made from snakeskin. The Japanese shamisen uses different skins depending on who plays it. Students might use dogskin, but professionals use catskin.
