Tamisiocarididae are a family of extinct sea animals. They belong to a group called radiodonts. These creatures were related to arthropods.

They lived a very long time ago. Most of them lived during the Cambrian Series 2. These animals lived in warm waters. We think they liked tropical or subtropical areas. This helps us understand where they lived.

These animals had a special way to eat. They used a method called filter feeding. This means they strained food from the water. They had parts near their heads called frontal appendages.

These appendages had many fine, dense spines. These spines worked like a net to catch food. One animal, Tamisiocaris, ate prey about one millimeter in size. This is a very small amount of food. It is like how modern basking sharks eat today.

Scientists have a specific way to name these groups. At first, people called them Cetiocaridae. This name came from a piece of art. A paleoartist named John Meszaros drew a creature. He called it "Ceticaris" in a book from 2013. However, this name did not follow science rules. No real animal named "Cetiocaris" actually existed. Because of this, the name was not valid.

In 2019, scientists gave them a new name. They chose Tamisiocarididae instead. This name comes from the only real genus known then. Fossils of these animals are found in many places. They were found in the Emu Bay Shale in Australia. Scientists also found them in Greenland. Some fossils were found in the United States. These fossils come from the Kinzers Formation.

We can see how these animals changed over time. A 2025 paper described a genus called Verrocaris. This animal was an intermediate type. It sat between predators and filter feeders. Most radiodonts were hunters. Tamisiocaridids were different because they strained food. This shows how life can change its way of living. It is a fascinating part of Earth's history.
