This area has a very old story. The word Taksim comes from Arabic and means "division" or "distribution."

Long ago, Sultan Mahmud I used this spot to split water lines. These lines carried water to different parts of Istanbul. There was once a large stone reservoir here too. In the 1800s, there was also an artillery barracks on the site. This building was later torn down in 1940 to make room for a park.

A famous landmark in the square is the Republic Monument.

An artist named Pietro Canonica crafted this monument. It was shown to the public in 1928. The monument honors the fifth anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. The Republic was founded in 1923 after the Turkish War of Independence. The square is also near the Atatürk Cultural Centre and the Taksim Mosque. Both of these buildings opened or reopened recently.

Taksim Square has seen many important moments in history. In 2013, people gathered in Gezi Park to protest.
