It is a place where people gather to see monuments or to share their voices. Because so many people visit, it is one of the most important parts of Cairo.

This square has gone through many changes over the years. It was first built in 1867 and called Ismailia Square. This name honored a ruler named Khedive Ismail. Later, the name changed to Tahrir Square, which means "Liberation."

In 1933, it was officially called Khedive Ismail Square again. However, after the revolution in 1952, the name Tahrir Square became official once more. The square has always been a place where the history of Egypt is made.

For a long time, the square has been a center for political protests. Many people have gathered here to ask for change in their government. During the 2011 revolution, huge crowds filled the area.

Some reports said over one million people were there. Other experts believe the number was closer to 200,000 or 300,000 people.

These gatherings made the square famous all over the world. It became a symbol of people standing together for what they believe in.

Between 2019 and 2020, the square underwent a large renovation. It was turned into an "open-air museum" with ancient Egyptian monuments.

Now, a 100-ton obelisk from the time of Ramses II stands in the center. This stone was found in a place called Tanis. There are also four statues with ram heads from Karnak. The area now has palm trees, olive trees, and marble benches. New lights help show off the beautiful buildings at night.

Today, the square is a busy hub for travel and tourism. The Sadat Metro Station runs deep underground beneath the square. This station connects different parts of the city like Giza and Maadi.

People can use underground paths to cross the wide, busy roads safely. The square is also near the Egyptian Museum and the Nile Hotel. It remains a place where the ancient past meets the busy life of modern Egypt.
