geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Taksim Square is a major district located in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, Turkey. It sits in the European part of the city. Many people consider this area to be the heart of modern Istanbul. It serves as a vital hub for tourism and leisure. The square is famous for its many restaurants, shops, and hotels.

It is also a primary center for transportation. The square connects many different parts of the city together.

The name Taksim comes from an Arabic word. It means "division" or "distribution." This name relates to the area's original purpose. Sultan Mahmud I established the use of this site for water management. It was the point where main water lines from northern Istanbul were collected. These lines were then branched off to other parts of the city. An Ottoman-era stone reservoir once stood along one side of the square.

This history of distribution defines the very identity of the location.

In the 19th century, the square held the Taksim Artillery Barracks. This building later became the Taksim Stadium. However, the barracks were demolished in 1940. This happened during construction works led by Henri Prost. Prost was a French architect and city planner. His plans were used to create both Taksim Square and Gezi Park. Gezi Park is a small green space located in the middle of the concrete area.

This change moved the area from a military site to a public park.

The square is home to the Republic Monument. This monument was crafted by the Italian sculptor Pietro Canonica. It was inaugurated in 1928. The monument commemorates the fifth anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey. The Republic was established in 1923 following the Turkish War of Independence.

Other important buildings surround the square. These include the Atatürk Cultural Centre and the Taksim Mosque. The cultural centre is a multi-purpose concert hall that reopened in 2021. The mosque also opened in 2021.

Transportation is a massive part of life in Taksim. It is the central station for the Istanbul Metro network. The square is the terminus for the Hacıosman-Levent-Taksim-Yenikapı subway line. A nostalgic tram runs along the nearby İstiklal Avenue. This tram ends near the Tünel, which opened in 1875. The Tünel is the second-oldest subway line in the world.

In 2006, the Kabataş-Taksim Funicular line F1 opened. This line connects the metro to the Kabataş tramway and Seabus port. It allows travelers to ascend to Taksim in just 110 seconds.

Taksim Square has also been a site for many significant social events. In 2013, the city municipality planned to rebuild the old barracks. They wanted to create a shopping venue on the site of Gezi Park. This led to the Occupy Taksim movement. Thousands of people rallied to stop the demolition of the park.

The square has also hosted various marches. For example, Circassians held a march in May 2011.

The area has experienced many difficult moments. These include clashes in 1969 and a massacre in 1977. In 2010, a suicide bomb also injured many people near a police bus.

Today, the square remains a busy destination for residents and tourists. It is surrounded by grand hotels like the InterContinental and The Marmara Hotel. You can find many international fast food chains like McDonald's and Burger King here. While it used to be a favorite spot for parades and New Year celebrations, rules have changed. Since 2016, permission for such gatherings is rarely given. The police often station equipment in the area to manage large demonstrations. Despite these changes, Taksim remains a central pillar of Istanbul's urban life.
