Taipa is a busy area in Macau.

It sits south of the Macau Peninsula. It is also located east of the island of Hengqin. This island is part of the nearby Chinese city of Zhuhai. Taipa is a place where many people live in suburban neighborhoods. It is known for having wide streets and a neat grid system. This makes the city planning feel very organized.

Long ago, Taipa was actually two separate islands. They were called Greater Taipa and Lesser Taipa. Two big hills tower over the land today. One hill is in the east and one is in the west.

Over time, the middle part became flat. This happened because of siltation and land reclamation. Land reclamation is when people add new land to the water. This process turned the two islands into one single island. Now, Taipa is also connected to Coloane through an area called Cotai.

People have lived in Taipa for a very long time. Hokkien-speaking fishermen first settled there about 800 years ago. Most Chinese settlers arrived during the Southern Song dynasty. In 1847, Portugal took over Lesser Taipa. They built the Taipa Fortress to stop pirates. Later, they also took over Greater Taipa by 1851. Portugal wanted to grow its colony and protect its ports. This helped them manage the water and land in the area.

For a long time, fishing was the main job in Taipa. There was a busy harbour where many fishermen met. In 1923, the first firecracker factory opened there. This started a big boom for the firecracker industry. Many people moved to the island to work in these factories. However, the industry began to fade in the 1980s. The very last factory closed down in 1984.

Today, Taipa is a very important place for travel and study. It is home to the Macau International Airport, which opened in 1995. Many students go to schools like the Macau University of Science and Technology. There are also many big hotels and resorts in the Cotai area. You can visit the Taipa Library inside Taipa Central Park.

The area connects to the peninsula using three different bridges. These bridges help people travel easily between the different parts of Macau.
