geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Taipa is a major urbanized and suburban area within the Special Administrative Region of Macau. It is located south of the Macau Peninsula and sits to the east of Hengqin island. Hengqin is part of the adjacent Chinese city of Zhuhai. Administratively, Taipa is part of the civil parish known as Freguesia de Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This parish also includes a portion of Hengqin island where the University of Macau is located. Today, Taipa is a central hub for transport, education, and tourism in the region.

The geography of Taipa has changed significantly over time due to natural and human processes. Originally, Taipa consisted of two separate islands: Greater Taipa and Lesser Taipa. These islands featured hilly terrain with two prominent hills. Colina da Taipa Grande sits to the east, while Colina da Taipa Pequena is to the west. Through the process of siltation and land reclamation, the central area became flat. This transformed the two islands into one single landmass.

Land reclamation is a method where new land is created from the sea. Starting in the 1990s, these efforts created a new area called Cotai. Cotai connects Taipa to the island of Coloane. This reclaimed area is now home to many mega-resorts, casinos, and exhibition centres. As a result, Taipa, Cotai, and Coloane have effectively become one large island. Taipa is now connected to the Macau Peninsula by three major structures: the Governador Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, the Friendship Bridge, and the Sai Van Bridge.

Human history in Taipa began roughly 800 years ago. Hokkien-speaking fishermen were the first to settle the area. Most Chinese settlement occurred during the Southern Song dynasty. In 1847, the Portuguese government annexed Lesser Taipa to expand its influence. They ordered the construction of the Taipa Fortress to protect Macau from pirates and marine outlaws. By 1851, Portugal had also annexed Greater Taipa. This expansion helped the Portuguese manage the divided harbour and provide water supplies to the port.

For many years, fishing was the primary industry in Taipa. A prominent harbour served as a gathering place for fishermen. In 1923, the first firecracker factory opened on the island. This triggered a massive boom in the firecracker industry. Many people moved to Taipa to work in these factories because the Peninsula had strict safety limits. Following an accident in 1925 that killed 100 people, more production shifted to the island. However, the industry eventually declined, and the final factory closed in 1984.

Taipa is also a vital center for modern infrastructure and education. The Macau International Airport opened in 1995 to serve the region. The area features organized city planning with wide streets arranged in a grid system. This differs from the historical layout of the Macau Peninsula. Taipa is home to several major universities, including the Macau University of Science and Technology and City University of Macau. It also contains various schools, such as the Escola Luso-Chinesa da Taipa. The population of Taipa was recorded at over 112,051 people in 2021.

The name "Taipa" has several interesting origins and meanings. In Cantonese, the area has been called many names, such as Lung Waan, which means "Dragon Ring." The Portuguese name likely comes from the Min Nan Chinese pronunciation of the character 氹. This character can refer to a cesspit, though that usage is now obsolete. Another local legend suggests a misunderstanding between Portuguese settlers and Chinese shopkeepers. The legend claims the Portuguese asked for the "nome" (name) of the place, and the Chinese responded "daai ba" (a lot) regarding sticky rice. While a charming story, there is no historical evidence to support it.
