History tells us that Macau has deep roots. The region was settled during the Han dynasty. Much later, Portuguese explorers arrived in the area. They first visited in 1513. After some battles, the Portuguese settled there peacefully. In 1557, they leased the land from the Ming dynasty. They paid 500 taels of silver every year as rent.

For a long time, Macau was a major warehouse. It helped move Chinese silk to Japan. This was a very prosperous time for the settlement.

Many different cultures have shaped the look of the city. You can see buildings with Portuguese, French, English, and Italian styles. These are mixed with Chinese architecture. This special blend is why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The name Macau might come from a sea goddess named Matsu. Local people believed she protected the harbour. When explorers asked for the name, locals spoke of her temple. This led to the name we use today. The spelling became standard in the early 1900s.

Macau changed hands in a major way in 1999. It had been a Portuguese colony for 442 years. On December 20, 1999, the territory was handed back to China.

Now, it follows the rule of "one country, two systems." This means it keeps its own economic and governing systems. The government has its own executive and legislative powers.
