Long ago, in 1277, people from the Song dynasty arrived there. They were fleeing from Mongol invaders. These people built several settlements in the north. The largest area was called Mong-Há. This is where the oldest temple in Macau was located.

Later, fishermen from other parts of China settled there too. They built the Temple of A-Ma to honor a goddess. The name Macau likely comes from this local temple.

Portuguese traders arrived in the area during the 1500s.

The first person to visit was Jorge Álvares in 1513. At first, the Portuguese only had visitor status. They built wooden buildings that were often destroyed. Some early trips were very difficult. There were battles in 1521 and 1522. After these setbacks, the traders kept working along the coast. They eventually began to build trade relations in Macau. In 1554, they signed a Luso-Chinese agreement. They rented Macau as a trading post from Ming China. They paid an annual lease of hundreds of silver taels.

By 1557, the Portuguese established a permanent settlement.

They paid a ground rent of 500 taels every year. The town was once just a small village. It had a few streets, churches, and houses. Most people there lived by trading goods. Because the Portuguese Crown had no plan, a Captain-Major led the people. Later, a group of three "good men" helped lead. They were chosen by vote to help with order.

From the 1540s, it helped move goods between China and Japan. This was called the triangular trade. Portuguese merchants sold Chinese silk and gold. In exchange, they received silver from Japan. This trade made Macau very wealthy.

Catholic missionaries also arrived in the city. The Jesuits helped share science and culture. They also helped build important things. In 1569, the first hospital was founded. They also started schools and orphanages for the community.

Portugal ruled Macau for many hundreds of years.

This rule changed through different political periods. It started as a settlement in 1557. Later, it became a true colony from 1849 to 1974. During this time, Portuguese control grew much stronger. Eventually, there was a transition period after 1974. Finally, Macau was handed back to China in 1999.
