Portuguese Macau was a unique territory under Portuguese rule from 1557 until 1999.

It served as both the first and the last European holding in China. The territory was composed of the Municipality of Macau and the Municipality of Ilhas. Its history is a complex story of trade, religion, and shifting political power. This settlement acted as a vital bridge between the East and the West for centuries. It remains a significant historical site because of its long-term role in global commerce.

The political history of Macau can be divided into several distinct stages. Some scholars identify three broad periods of Portuguese rule. The first period lasted from 1557 to 1849. During this time, the Portuguese had jurisdiction over their own community but lacked real sovereignty. The second period was the colonial era, lasting from 1849 to 1974. In this stage, Portuguese sovereignty strengthened, making Macau a constitutional part of Portuguese territory. The third was a transition period following the 1974 Carnation Revolution. This period lasted until the formal handover to China in 1999.

Other historians, such as Wu Zhiliang, describe even more specific stages. These include the early relationship period from 1514 to 1583. This was followed by the Senado period from 1583 to 1783. After that came a period of decline from 1783 to 1849. The colonial period then spanned from 1849 to 1976. Later, there was a period of district autonomy from 1976 to 1988. Finally, the transition period occurred from 1988 to 1999.

These stages show how the relationship between Portugal and China evolved over time.

Long before the Portuguese arrived, Macau had its own history. In 1277, approximately 50,000 supporters of the Song dynasty arrived in the region. They were fleeing from Mongol invaders and established several settlements. The largest was in the Mong-Há region.

Later, fishermen from Guangzhou and Fujian settled there too. They built the Temple of A-Ma to honor a goddess. The name Macau likely comes from the Cantonese name for this bay, A-Ma Gao. This name eventually evolved into Amacao, Macao, and finally Macau.

The arrival of the Portuguese began during the Age of Discovery. Jorge Álvares was the first Portuguese visitor in 1513.

Early attempts to settle were often met with conflict. In 1521 and 1522, battles occurred at Tunmen and Sincouwaan. These setbacks ended early settlements like Tamão. However, Portuguese traders eventually established trade relations through the Luso-Chinese agreement of 1554. They rented Macau as a trading post from Ming China. By 1557, they established a permanent settlement by paying an annual ground rent of 500 taels of silver.

Macau's prosperity was largely driven by the China–Macau–Japan triangular trade.

This trade began in the 1540s when Portuguese merchants sold Chinese products in Japan. The system involved exchanging Chinese silk and gold for silver from Japan. This lucrative monopoly was managed by the Captain-Major of the Voyage of China and Japan.

This commercial success allowed Macau to grow from a small village into a significant port. The wealth from this trade supported the city's development and its diverse population.

Religion and social services also played a massive role in Macau's development. Catholic missionaries, especially Jesuits, used Macau as a base to reach China and Japan. They promoted scientific and cultural exchanges between the West and the East.

In 1569, the first hospital, Hospital dos Pobres, was founded. Religious groups also established orphanages and schools like the Colégio de São Paulo. Because of its importance, Pope Gregory XIII created the Diocese of Macau in 1576. These institutions helped shape the social fabric of the territory for hundreds of years.

Throughout its history, Macau had to balance its presence with Chinese authority. The Chinese authorities viewed Macau as part of the Chinese Celestial Empire.

Consequently, the Portuguese were required to pay annual rents and taxes. Chinese officials also supervised the settlement to manage trade and taxation. In 1573, a barrier was built on the northern border to control the supply of goods. This constant interaction between two different powers defined the unique character of Portuguese Macau until the handover in 1999.
