Lingdingyang

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lingdingyang is a very important part of the sea. It is the middle channel of the Pearl River estuary. This channel sits in the Guangdong region. It runs between two other water areas. One area is called Shiziyang in the north. The other area is called Jiuzhouyang in the south.

Lingdingyang connects these different parts of the river mouth. It is a busy place for water to flow.

Finding your way through this channel is easy to map. The water starts at Humen in the north. It stretches down to Jiuzhouyang in the south. Jiuzhouyang sits near the tip of Taipa. It also sits near the western tip of Lantau. The channel reaches the southern end of the Wanshan Archipelago.

These landmarks show exactly where the water goes. It acts as a middle path for the whole estuary.

Many years ago, this place saw a famous person. Wen Tianxiang was a leader in the Southern Song Dynasty. He was the last Prime Minister of that group. The Yuan army captured him in Guangdong. He was taken on a warship across this water.

He traveled through the Lingdingyang during this time. His story is now part of the history of this place.

While on the ship, Wen Tianxiang felt a deep sadness. He wrote a poem about his journey. The poem is called "Crossing the Lingdingyang (Lonely Ocean)." It was his way to show his feelings.

The poem tells of his time on the lonely ocean. This piece of writing links the water to history. It makes the channel feel very special to people.

Today, the channel looks very different because of big builds. People use large structures to cross the water now. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge crosses right over Lingdingyang. This includes both a bridge and a tunnel.

There is also the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge here. These paths help people travel across the channel easily. They connect the lands around the Pearl River estuary. The water remains a key part of the region.
