It sits inside the Taichung Basin on a wide coastal plain. To the east, the tall Central Mountain Range rises up. To the west, the land is flat near the Taiwan Strait. The city is the second-largest city in all of Taiwan. More than 2.86 million people live in this busy area.

It is the main center for the Taichung-Changhua metropolitan area.

The land around the city changes depending on where you look. To the north, there are rolling hills near Miaoli County. To the south, the ground is very flat near Changhua County. The weather is mostly warm and humid throughout the year. It stays warm during the day, but nights can feel cooler in winter. Taichung does not get as much rain as other big cities in Taiwan. The mountains to the east help protect the city from some big storms.

Many different groups of people have called this place home. Long ago, indigenous tribes like the Atayal lived on these plains. They were hunters and gatherers who also grew crops like taro. Later, the city grew through many different eras of history. During the Qing dynasty, it was even named a capital city. In 1895, the Japanese era began and changed how the city was planned. They built many roads, dams, and the first railway station in 1917.

Taichung is a city that keeps growing and changing. In 2010, the city and the surrounding county merged together. This created the large special municipality we see today. The city is led by a mayor and a 46-member City Council. It is a place where history meets modern life every day. From old temples to new high-speed trains, there is much to see.
