A tabby is not a breed of cat. It is a pattern on their fur.

Most tabby cats have a dark M shape on their forehead. They also have marks near their eyes and ears. This pattern comes from their wild ancestors. Many wild cats have similar coats to help them hide.

There are four main patterns. The mackerel tabby has thin stripes. These look like the bones of a fish. The classic tabby has thick, swirling bands. These bands can look like a bullseye on their sides.

Some cats have a spotted pattern. This happens when a gene breaks the stripes into dots. The ticked tabby is different. It has hairs with different color bands. This makes the cat look like it has sand on its fur.

Some cats have patches of color. A torbie cat has both orange and black patches. If the cat also has white fur, it is called a caliby. These patterns are part of the cat's genes. Genes are the instructions that tell a body how to grow.
