The name "Taal" comes from a Tagalog word. In the Batangueño dialect, it means true, genuine, or pure. The area was also named after the Taa-lan tree. This tree used to grow along the river and the lake shore. Even the river was once a narrow channel. It connected the lake to Balayan Bay long ago.
