Because the coastlines are not ideal for big ports, people rely on land and rail travel. Many people live in the lowlands found between the mountains.

The weather in Tōhoku can be quite harsh. It is colder than other parts of Honshu. This happens because of the Siberian High.

Because it is cold, farmers can only grow one crop a year in paddy fields. For a long time, Tōhoku was known as the granary of Japan. It supplied rice to the markets in Sendai and Tokyo-Yokohama. In fact, it provided 20 percent of the whole nation's rice crop. The Pacific coast stays a bit warmer and has less snow than people might think.

Tōhoku has a very long and interesting history. In ancient times, it was home to the Emishi and Ainu peoples.

Later, the Northern Fujiwara clan ruled the area as their own realm. They were independent from the Imperial Court in Kyoto. Their rule ended in 1189 when Minamoto no Yoritomo defeated them. Another famous leader was Date Masamune. He ruled a large area and built many beautiful palaces. He even encouraged foreign traders and missionaries to visit his land.

Many people visit the region to see its natural beauty. The poet Matsuo Bashō traveled through Tōhoku and wrote about it. He praised the beauty of the tiny islands in Matsushima Bay.

There are also many famous castles to explore. One such place is Aizuwakamatsu Castle. The region is also known for its many national parks. These include Bandai-Asahi and Sanriku Fukkō National Parks. People love to see the mountains, lakes, and rivers.

Today, Tōhoku is a place of both industry and change. In the 1960s, many factories for steel and chemicals began to grow. However, the region has also faced very difficult times. A huge earthquake and tsunami hit the east coast on March 11, 2011. This was a 9.0-magnitude event. It caused much damage and left 500,000 people homeless. Even with these hard challenges, cities like Sendai continue to grow. The region remains a very important part of Japan.
