You can visit the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. There are also many other parks like Chōkai and Oga. The weather can be very cold in the winter. This is especially true in places far from the sea. Many people love to visit hot spring resorts called onsen. These are near Lake Tazawa and are very popular. The land is filled with green rice fields and thick forests. People often work in farming, fishing, or forestry.

Akita has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the area was home to nomadic tribes. These people were called hunter-gatherers. In the year 658, a man named Abe no Hirafu arrived. He conquered the native Ezo tribes near Akita and Noshiro. He built a fort on the Mogami River. Later, in 733, a military settlement called Akita Castle was built. For 260 years, the Satake clan ruled the region. They helped grow the farming and mining industries. In 1871, the modern borders of Akita were finally made.

There are many special things to see and do. The name Akita means "autumn rice paddy." Because of this, the area is famous for rice and sake. Sake is a special drink made from rice. Akita is also the home of the Akita dog. Many people visit to see the Namahage ritual in Oga. This happens on New Year's Eve. In August, people celebrate the Akita Kantō festival. You can also visit Kakunodate to see old samurai houses. It is often called the "little Kyoto."

Today, Akita faces some changes in its population. Many young people move to big cities like Tokyo. This means there are fewer children living in Akita. In 2022, only 9.3% of the people were under age 15. A large number of people, 38.6%, are age 65 or older. Because of this, some small towns are merging together. People are working hard to bring visitors back to Akita. They use "green tourism" to show off the forests. They also use "agritourism" to show off the farms. They want people to enjoy the local food and culture.
