Symptomatic treatment

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

When you are sick, you may feel bad. Doctors can give you symptomatic treatment. This is a way to help you feel better. It focuses on your signs of being sick. It does not fix the cause of the sickness.

Doctors use many tools for this. They might use analgesics to reduce pain. They may use antipyretics to lower a fever. Some medicines help with a cough. Others help with allergies. These steps help you stay comfy.

Sometimes, this is the only way to help. Many viral diseases, like the flu, work this way. Doctors also use it to manage side effects from other drugs.

But doctors must be very careful. This treatment can sometimes hide a real problem. For example, a fever might hide a bad bacteria. If the fever goes away, doctors might miss the sickness. This can lead to more harm. The treatment itself can also cause new problems. These are called iatrogenic effects. They can cause things like stomach bleeding or nausea. Doctors must think about these risks carefully.
