There are many different kinds. Some are easy to find at a store. These are called over-the-counter drugs. Others must come from a doctor. These are called prescription drugs. Doctors give these when there is a risk of misuse or addiction.

One common type is paracetamol. It is also known as acetaminophen. It helps with mild pain and fever. Its effects usually last two to four hours.

Another group is called NSAIDs. These help with pain and fever. They can also lower swelling. Some people use them as gels on their skin. This helps avoid side effects in the rest of the body.

Some drugs work on the brain. These are called opioids. They are very strong. They can help with severe pain. However, they can also cause side effects like nausea. They can also lead to tolerance. This means the body gets used to the drug. Then, the medicine may not work as well as before.

Doctors sometimes use other drugs to help. These are called adjuvants. They help the main pain medicine work better. They are often used for nerve pain.
