Most side effects are bad. They might make a person feel unwell. However, some side effects are actually good. Doctors sometimes use a drug for a new reason. They do this if a side effect helps. This is called off-label use.

For example, X-rays are used to see inside the body. Scientists found they can also help kill bad cells. Now, doctors use them to treat tumors. Another drug, Sildenafil, was made for heart issues. It was found to help with other things too.

Doctors also study how often side effects happen. They use different words to show how common they are. A side effect can be very common. It can also be rare. Some are so rare they happen to very few people.
