Side effect

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A side effect is an unintended result from a medicine or treatment. When a person takes a drug, it might do more than one thing. Most of these extra effects are adverse, which means they are not helpful. However, some side effects can actually be beneficial for a person. Doctors might use a drug for a new reason if a side effect helps. This is called off-label use until the use is officially approved.

Scientists track how often these effects happen to people. The World Health Organization uses specific words to describe this frequency. A side effect might be very common if it happens to 1 in 10 people. It is called common if it happens to 1 in 100 people. If it happens to only 1 in 1,000 people, it is uncommon. Rare effects happen to 1 in 10,000 people, and very rare effects happen even less often. These numbers describe how often symptoms appear after taking a drug.

History shows us how side effects can change medicine. For a long time, X-rays were only used to see inside the body. Scientists later found they could also destroy bad cells. This discovery led to using X-rays in radiotherapy to treat tumors. Another example is the drug thalidomide. From 1957 to 1961, it was sold to treat morning sickness in pregnant women. Sadly, it caused many babies to be born with serious health problems. Today, doctors use thalidomide safely to treat skin disorders and cancers.

Many different medicines have useful side effects that doctors use today. The drug Sildenafil was first made for pulmonary hypertension. Later, people found it could also help produce erections. Another drug called Bupropion is an anti-depressant. It also helps people stop smoking, and it is sold as Zyban. The drug Gabapentin is used for seizures. However, it also helps with things like migraines and restless leg syndrome. Even the drug sertraline has a side effect that can treat premature ejaculation.

Understanding side effects helps us see how medicine works in the body. It is like a key that might open two different doors. A drug might be made to fix one problem, but it touches other parts of the body too. This can lead to a bad result or a helpful one. Doctors and patients must read the information leaflets that come with drugs. These lists show many possible side effects for almost every medicine. Learning about these effects helps everyone stay safe and healthy.
