The men had many different ideas about love. Phaedrus said love is very old and gives people courage. Pausanias said there are two kinds of love. One is common, and one is heavenly. Eryximachus, a doctor, said love affects all things in nature.

Aristophanes told a very famous story. He said people were once whole beings with two bodies. A god split them in half. Now, people spend their lives looking for their other half. Plato wrote this story down. It is a major work of philosophy. It shows how people think about big ideas.
