The Rök runestone from around 800 AD is the first literary text. It contains long passages from legends written in verse. When Christianity arrived around 1100 AD, writing changed. Most writers used Latin, which was a common language for the Church. This meant there were very few texts written in Old Swedish. Some early Swedish writings were just laws or religious books.

In the 1500s, a major change helped the Swedish language grow.

By the 1600s, writers began to use Swedish for more than just religion. Georg Stiernhielm published a poem called Hercules in 1658. This was the first large poem written in the Swedish language.

The 1700s were known as a Golden Age for Swedish writing.
