As a boy, he watched a ship return from the Arctic. This moment made him want to explore the world. He became a geographer and a photographer. He also wrote books and made drawings of his travels. Hedin spent much of his life studying Central Asia. He wanted to find the parts of the world that were not yet on maps. His work helped people understand huge areas of land and water.

His travels often took him into very difficult places. He went through high mountains and hot, dry deserts. During his trips, he found the sources of three big rivers. These were the Brahmaputra, Indus, and Sutlej rivers. He also mapped a lake called Lop Nur. In the Tarim Basin, he found the remains of old cities. He even found parts of the Great Wall of China in the desert.

These discoveries helped fill in the "white spaces" on maps of that time.

Hedin began his journey of discovery when he was quite young. He studied under a famous expert named Ferdinand von Richthofen. This teacher helped him fall in love with studying Asia. Hedin worked very hard to learn many different languages. Between 1894 and 1908, he led three daring trips. He explored parts of Chinese Turkestan and Tibet. These areas had not been seen by Europeans before.
