It sits on the coast of Honshu. The Izu Peninsula is to the east. The bay is open to the Pacific Ocean to the south. The peninsula helps protect the bay from big waves.

The bay is very deep. It has a deep part called the Suruga Trough. This is the deepest trough in Japan. Many rivers flow into the bay. These are the Fuji, Oi, and Abe rivers. They carve paths into the sea floor. Some parts of the coast have sandy beaches. Other parts have rocky shores and small islands.

Many people use the bay. It is a great place for fishing and sailing. People also go there to swim. Some areas are very good for fishing.

In the past, the bay had a big problem. Factories made the water very dirty. This was bad for the sea life. A famous movie monster even used this pollution in a story. Today, people still study the water to keep it safe.
