A support group is a special kind of organization. In these groups, members help one another with a shared problem. Usually, these problems are difficult or burdensome to face alone. People join these groups to share ways to cope with their issues. They also want to feel more empowered and find a community. Members might share information or listen to each other's personal stories. They can also build social networks to stay connected.

There are different ways these groups work. Some are called self-help groups. These are fully managed by the members themselves. Most of these members are volunteers who have personal experience. You might know them as fellowships or mutual aid groups. A common example is the 12-step group called Alcoholics Anonymous. Other groups are run by professionals like social workers or psychologists. These experts facilitate the discussions in places like hospitals or treatment centers.

Support groups have a long history of helping people. While they seem modern, they act like older fraternal organizations. In the past, extended families often provided this kind of support. Today, we also have advocacy groups that work for specific causes. These include interest groups like trade unions or environmental groups. Some groups focus on long-term health issues like cancer or diabetes. Others help with temporary things like grief or a medical condition.

Since 1982, the internet has changed how people connect. Online support groups allow people to talk about sensitive personal issues. This can be very helpful for people with rare health problems. They can find a community even if they live far apart. Some people like being anonymous when they talk online. A study by Baym in 2010 found that anonymity helps lonely or anxious people. It lets them express themselves honestly without being known.

Online groups have many special features that in-person groups do not. One feature is called asynchronous communication. This means members do not have to be online at the same time. You can post a question and others can answer it later. This helps people who have busy schedules or different time zones. People also like that they can reread and edit their comments. This can make them feel more confident when sharing. In good groups, members stay for a long time to help others.
