Super star cluster

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A super star cluster is a very big group of young stars.

These groups are called "super" because they are very bright. They also have a lot of mass. Mass is how much matter is in something. These clusters do not have to be large in size. They just need to be very heavy and bright.

They often have many large, young stars. These stars can light up the gas around them. This gas is called an HII region. A thick cocoon of dust often hides these clusters. This dust makes it hard to see them with normal light. Scientists use radio and infrared light to see them better.

Many clusters are far away in other galaxies. We found 197 of them in the galaxy M82. The Hubble Space Telescope helps us find them. It has a high resolution. This means it can see fine details clearly. One cluster in our galaxy is called Westerlund 1. It was found by Bengt Westerlund in 1961. These clusters may grow into globular clusters later in life.
