Super star cluster

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A super star cluster is a huge group of young stars. These groups are called "super" because they are very bright. They also have a lot of mass. Mass is how much matter is in an object. These clusters do not need to be physically large to earn this name. They just need to be very heavy and luminous. Many scientists think these clusters will become globular clusters later in their lives.

These clusters work in a very busy way. They contain many young and massive stars. These stars light up the gas around them. This gas is called an HII region. Sometimes the gas is called an ultra dense HII region. A thick cocoon of dust often surrounds these areas. This dust can hide the stars from our view. It causes extinction, which means visible light cannot pass through easily. Because of this, we use radio and infrared light to see them.

Finding these clusters was once a very hard job. Most clusters are very small compared to their whole galaxy. Old telescopes did not have enough resolution to see them clearly. The Hubble Space Telescope changed everything in the 1990s. It has a high angular resolution of about 1/10 arcsecond. This allows astronomers to see fine details. They can now measure the properties of the clusters. They can even see the individual stars inside.

We have found many different clusters in space. Bengt Westerlund discovered Westerlund 1 in our own Milky Way in 1961. This was the first super star cluster found in our galaxy. One star in that cluster is called Westerlund 1-26. Its radius is larger than the orbit of Jupiter. In the galaxy M82, the Hubble Space Telescope found 197 clusters. Another cluster, R136, is a famous prototype. It sits inside the NGC 2070 region.

Super star clusters usually form in very active places. They often appear when two galaxies interact or merge. They also form in areas with high star formation rates. These places must have enough pressure to build a cluster. You might find them in dwarf starburst galaxies. They can also be found in the arms of spiral galaxies. These clusters are like the busy nurseries of the universe. They show us how stars are born in large groups.
