Most of the plant is made of water. In 2020, people grew 1.9 billion tonnes of it. Brazil grows 40% of the world's total.

This plant first grew in New Guinea. Long ago, Austronesian sailors carried it to many islands. They also brought it to India and China. In India, people found ways to make crystal sugar. This sweet treat spread to the Mediterranean and North Africa. Later, Spanish and Portuguese sailors brought it to the Americas.

Growing sugar changed history. In the 18th century, many people were forced to work on plantations. Some were brought as slaves. Later, many people from India and China moved to work under contracts called indenture. These moves helped many ethnic groups settle in new lands.

People use many parts of the plant. Factories make white sugar from the juice. Other people use the reeds for mats or screens. In some places, people eat the young flower heads.
