Maple syrup is a sweet treat made from tree sap.

It comes from trees like the sugar maple. These trees store sugar in their roots during winter. In the spring, the sugar rises into the sap.

Indigenous people in North America were the first to make it. They used clay pots over big fires to boil the sap. They even had a special Maple Dance to celebrate.

Later, European settlers learned how to make syrup too. They used tools to drill holes in the tree trunks. They hung buckets on wooden spouts to catch the sap.

Now, many people use plastic tubing to collect sap. The sap flows from the tree to a sugar shack. In the shack, the sap is boiled in large pans. This boils away the water to make the syrup thick. Most syrup comes from Canada and the United States. Quebec makes most of the world's supply. People love to pour it on pancakes or waffles.
