There are different kinds of molasses. The first kind is very sweet. It is often called cane syrup in the Southern United States. The second kind is a bit bitter. The third kind is called blackstrap molasses. It is the darkest and has a very strong taste. Blackstrap molasses is also full of vitamins and minerals. It has iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. One tablespoon can give you a lot of these nutrients.

People use molasses in many ways. It makes gingerbread and dark rye bread taste good. It is also used to make barbecue sauce. On Madeira Island, people call it mel-de-cana. This means "cane honey" in Portuguese. People also use molasses to make rum. Some people even add it to soil to help plants grow.
