The Sudd is a massive swamp in South Sudan.

It is part of the White Nile river. This wetland is one of the largest in the world. The name Sudd means "barrier" or "obstruction." For a long time, the thick plants blocked boats. Even Roman soldiers could not pass through it.

The swamp changes with the seasons. During the wet season, it can cover 21% of the country. The water comes from places like Lake Victoria. Much of the water is lost to the air. This happens through evaporation.

Many plants grow here. Some plants, like papyrus, grow in deep water. These plants can form huge floating islands. These islands can be 30 km long!

The Sudd is full of life. Over 400 types of birds live there. You might see a great white pelican. Many animals also move through the grass. About 1.2 million animals, like the white-eared kob, travel in large groups. In the water, you can find fish, hippos, and crocodiles. Local people also use the land for animals and crops.
