Two big rivers join to make the Nile. These are called tributaries. The first is the White Nile. It starts near Lake Victoria. The second is the Blue Nile. It starts near Lake Tana in Ethiopia. The Blue Nile brings more water than the White Nile. The two rivers meet in Khartoum, Sudan. From there, the Nile flows through deserts to Cairo, Egypt.

The river is very important for life. In the past, it helped ancient Egypt grow. Every year, the river would flood. This left dark, rich soil on the banks. This soil helped farmers grow food in the dry desert.
