Stunting often happens in the first 1000 days of life. This is the time from when a baby starts in the womb until they turn two.

Many things can cause stunting. A mother may not have enough healthy food while pregnant. This can lead to a baby being born with a low birth weight. Poor sanitation also plays a big role. Sanitation is the way we keep our water and land clean. If water is dirty, children may get sick with diarrhea. This sickness makes it hard for the body to use nutrients from food.
