life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Frailty is a state of health in older adults. It happens when the body loses its built-in reserves. This makes a person more vulnerable to health changes. Small things like a cold can have big impacts.

There are many signs of frailty. A person might feel very tired or walk slowly. They may also lose weight without trying. Muscle weakness is common. This is called sarcopenia, which means losing muscle mass and strength. Bone loss can also happen. This is called osteoporosis. It can make bones break more easily during a fall.

Doctors use tools to find frailty. One tool looks at five main areas. These are weakness, slowness, tiredness, low activity, and weight loss. If a person has three or more, they may be frail. Another way is to count health deficits. A deficit is a problem in a body system. Having more problems can mean a higher risk.

Frailty is not just a part of getting old. It can be prevented or slowed down. Regular exercise and a healthy diet help the most. Eating well is very important for staying strong.
