The story follows a young boy named Steven who lives in the fictional Beach City. Steven is half-human and half-Gem, which means he is part magical alien. He lives with the Crystal Gems, a group of alien warriors named Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. These Gems project humanoid forms from magical gemstones at their cores. Together, they act like a family to protect the world from many threats. The show is loved for exploring important themes like love and healthy relationships.

The show uses a special way of making animation called a storyboard-driven approach. In this method, storyboard artists draw the scenes and write the dialogue. This helps them shape the whole story as they draw. The music is also a huge part of the show's identity. Composers named Aivi & Surasshu created music that helps tell the story. Characters can even use a power called fusion. Fusion is when Gems merge their bodies and abilities to form a new, more powerful personality. This creates a brand new character with a different look and feel.

Rebecca Sugar began developing the show while she was a writer for Adventure Time. She wanted to create a character based on her younger brother, Steven Sugar. He even worked as an artist for the series. Sugar used her own childhood experiences and Delaware beaches to design the look of Beach City. The art was also influenced by things like video games and anime. The show's creators wanted the art to be flexible and simple. This allowed more artists to join in and add their own ideas. This teamwork helped the world of the show feel very detailed and real.

The series had a long run from November 2013 to January 2019. It lasted for five full seasons on television. After the main show ended, a movie was released in September 2019. There was also a short series called Steven Universe Future that ran until March 2020. The show has won many important honors for its great work. In 2019, it won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Program. It also won a Peabody Award for Children's & Youth Programming that same year. These awards recognized how well the show handled complex topics.

Many people enjoy the show because it feels very meaningful. It was even ranked number 99 on the BBC's list of the 100 Greatest Television Series of the 21st Century. The show is famous for its characters and how they grow over time. For example, the character Garnet represents a same-sex relationship through her fusion. This helped make history during the first same-sex wedding in children's animation. The songs, like "Stronger Than You," have become very popular with fans. Because of its great stories, the show continues to inspire many new creators today.
