Steven Universe is an American animated television series created by Rebecca Sugar for Cartoon Network.

The series follows the coming-of-age journey of a young boy named Steven Universe. He lives in the fictional town of Beach City with the Crystal Gems. These Gems are magical, mineral-based aliens named Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. Steven is unique because he is half-human and half-Gem. He inherited his gemstone from his mother, Rose Quartz, who was the former leader of the Crystal Gems. The show explores deep themes like love, family, and the importance of healthy relationships.

The Gems function as ageless, genderless warriors. They project female humanoid forms from magical gemstones at their cores. One of the most important mechanics in the series is fusion. Fusion is the ability of Gems to merge their bodies and abilities. This process creates a new, more powerful personality.

Through fusion, characters can express complex connections. The show also explores how Gems interact with the world. Some Gems have been corrupted by a Gem weapon of mass destruction. These corrupted Gems can no longer maintain a rational, humanoid form.

The series follows several distinct narrative stages across five seasons. In the beginning, Steven learns to use his expanding range of powers. He accompanies the Gems on missions to protect humanity from monsters. Later, the story reveals that the Gems are fugitives from an interstellar empire. This empire is ruled by the Gem Homeworld. The plot expands as Steven learns about his mother's past. He discovers that Rose Quartz was actually Pink Diamond, one of the leaders of the Gem Homeworld. This revelation leads to a major conflict involving the Diamonds, who are leaders of the empire.

Rebecca Sugar developed the series while working as a storyboard artist on Adventure Time.

She based the character of Steven on her younger brother, Steven Sugar. Her brother actually worked as an artist for the series. Sugar wanted the character to reflect the experience of a younger brother. She wanted him to feel comfortable but also eager to rise up. The production team included many talented artists. Jackie Buscarino served as a producer to supervise the crew. Lead character designer Danny Hynes and background designer Steven Sugar helped build the visual world.

The show used a storyboard-driven approach to create its episodes. This means storyboard artists drew the scenes and wrote the dialogue. This method allowed them to shape the narrative while they drew. The visual design of Beach City was inspired by Sugar's childhood and Delaware beaches. It also drew from anime, video games, and art history. The animation was handled by South Korean studios Sunmin Image Pictures and Rough Draft Korea. The music by composers Aivi & Surasshu became an essential part of the show's identity.

Songs like "Stronger Than You" became very popular with the audience.

Steven Universe earned significant critical acclaim and many awards. The series ran for five seasons from November 2013 to January 2019. In 2019, it won a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Program. It was the first animated series to win this specific award. That same year, it also won a Peabody Award for Children's & Youth Programming.

The BBC ranked the show at number 99 on its list of the 100 Greatest Television Series of the 21st Century. These honors reflect the show's high quality in storytelling and character development.

The series is notable for its representation of complex social topics. It features prominent LGBTQ representation through its characters. For example, the character Garnet is a fusion that embodies a same-sex relationship. This led to the first same-sex wedding in children's animation history. The show also addresses mental health and identity. By connecting these themes to a fantasy setting, the series reaches a broad audience. It continues to influence other creators and maintains a very large fanbase.
