Gravity Falls is an American animated mystery comedy television series. It was created by Alex Hirsch for the Disney Channel and Disney XD. The show follows the adventures of 12-year-old twin siblings, Dipper and Mabel Pines. They travel from their home in Piedmont, California, to the fictitious town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. There, they spend their summer vacation with their great-uncle, Stanley Pines, also known as "Grunkle" Stan.

The town is famous for paranormal incidents and supernatural creatures. Dipper and Mabel help Stan run the Mystery Shack, which is a tourist trap he owns. While working there, they investigate the local mysteries of the strange town.

Producing an episode is a complex, multi-step process. It begins in a writers' room where a simple synopsis is presented. Writers then define the dramatic structure and add a character-driven subplot. This subplot must connect the characters' feelings to the "impossibility of the week," such as a monster or magic. Writers create both "A-stories" and "B-stories," which are the main and secondary plots. After an outline is checked, a draft is written. Alex Hirsch and creative director Mike Rianda often personally revise these drafts. They may work for 24 hours straight to perfect the dialogue.

Once the script is finished, it is translated into a storyboard. This allows artists to plan the visual action and gags. Finally, animation studios like Rough Draft Korea, Digital eMation, and Yearim Productions bring the drawings to life.

The characters in the show are deeply connected to Alex Hirsch's own life. He used his childhood experiences and his relationship with his twin sister, Ariel, as inspiration. Mabel Pines was inspired by Ariel, who wore wacky sweaters and had many different crushes. Dipper was based on Hirsch's own memories of being a neurotic child. Grunkle Stan was inspired by Hirsch's grandfather, a man who told tall tales. Even the setting draws from real life, including roadside attractions and the town of Boring. Hirsch even developed the original concept as an 11-minute student film while at the California Institute of the Arts.

The series had a very specific production and broadcast history. It premiered on June 15, 2012, on the Disney Channel. The show ran for two seasons until February 15, 2016. Hirsch originally planned for only two or three seasons. He actually considered ending the show after the first season because the work was so draining. However, people like Jon Stewart and Patrick McHale convinced him to finish the story. Hirsch decided to end the series on his own terms rather than having it cancelled. The final episode was a one-hour special titled "Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back the Falls."

Gravity Falls was a massive commercial and critical success. It became Disney XD's highest-rated show in 2015 and early 2016. The series set several ratings records for the network. It also won prestigious honors, including two Emmy Awards and three Annie Awards. It also earned a BAFTA Children's Award.

The show's popularity reached a global audience. It aired in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia. The series attracted a broad and passionate fandom that continues to this day.

Even though the television show ended, the story has continued in other formats. Fans can find more details about the world in written works. These include a 2016 replica of Journal 3 and the 2018 graphic novel, "Gravity Falls: Lost Legends." There is also a 2024 novel for teens called "The Book of Bill." These books allow the mystery to expand beyond the original animation. The characters and the strange world of Gravity Falls remain active through these various media.

The impact of Gravity Falls extends to the broader field of animation. It is considered an influence for many animated shows that were created after it. The show proved that animation could be satirical, observational, and grounded in character interaction. It showed that animation does not have to be just for children. The series' success helped shape how modern animated mysteries are told. Today, the show is remembered for its high-quality writing, voice acting, and unique humor.
