It follows 12-year-old twins named Dipper and Mabel Pines. The siblings travel from Piedmont, California, to Oregon for summer vacation. They stay with their great-uncle, Stan Pines, at his shop called the Mystery Shack. This shop is a tourist trap in a very strange town. The town is full of supernatural creatures and paranormal events. Dipper soon finds a mysterious journal that describes these creatures. He and Mabel work with friends like Wendy and Soos to solve local mysteries.

Creating an episode involves many careful steps. First, writers meet in a special room to plan the story. They create a main plot and a smaller side story. A writer then makes a detailed outline for the episode. After that, the script is written and often revised by the creators. Alex Hirsch and Mike Rianda worked very hard on these scripts. Sometimes they worked all night to get the dialogue just right. Once the script is ready, artists turn it into a storyboard. This helps the team see how the action will look. Finally, animation studios like Rough Draft Korea bring the drawings to life.

Alex Hirsch created the series based on his own life. He used his childhood memories of summer vacations to build the world. Mabel was inspired by his twin sister, Ariel Hirsch. Just like Mabel, Ariel wore wacky sweaters and had many crushes. Dipper was based on how Hirsch felt as a young boy. Even the character of Grunkle Stan came from Hirsch's grandfather. Hirsch also used real places for inspiration, like the town of Boring. He even made a short student film before pitching the idea to Disney.

The show had a very specific timeline during its run. It first premiered on June 15, 2012, on the Disney Channel. The series ran for two seasons until February 15, 2016. Hirsch decided to finish the show after the second season was done. He wanted the story to reach its intended conclusion. The final episode was a one-hour special called "Weirdmageddon 3: Take Back the Falls." Even though the show ended, the story continues in books. These include the Journal 3 replica and the book titled The Book of Bill.

Gravity Falls became a huge success for the Disney networks. It was the highest-rated show on Disney XD in 2015 and early 2016. The series won many honors, including two Emmy Awards and three Annie Awards. It also won a BAFTA Children's Award. Many people around the world watched it, including fans in Canada, the UK, and Australia. The show's humor and characters influenced many other animated series that came later. Today, many fans still show their love through official merchandise and cosplay. The show remains a special part of animation history.
