The show uses an ensemble cast with many different actors. This means there is no single main hero. Instead, the audience sees the world through many different eyes.

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created the series for television.

They first met George R. R. Martin through his literary agent. Benioff read the first book, A Game of Thrones, and loved it. He and Weiss then met with Martin for five hours. They pitched the idea to HBO in a restaurant. Martin thought the books were too big for a movie. He believed they were "unfilmable" because of their huge size. So, the creators decided to make a TV show instead.

Game of Thrones ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019.

It had a total of 73 episodes. The show was a huge success for HBO. It won 59 Primetime Emmy Awards in total. This is the most awards ever for a drama series. It also won three Hugo Awards for best dramatic presentation. By the final season, some main actors earned a lot of money. Five actors made a high amount per episode.

Many parts of the show come from real history. The setting of Westeros feels like medieval Europe.

The stories are inspired by the English Wars of the Roses. This was a real fight between the houses of Lancaster and York. The show also uses ideas from the Roman Empire. It has elements from the Viking Age and ancient Egypt. Even the "Wall" is like Hadrian's Wall in England. These real details help make the fantasy world feel very real.
