Nash entered the professional ranks through the 1996 NBA draft. The Phoenix Suns selected him as the 15th overall pick. Initially, he played a limited role behind established stars like Kevin Johnson and Jason Kidd. Because he had not played in a major college conference, some fans were skeptical of his talent. In 1998, the Suns traded Nash to the Dallas Mavericks. This move proved to be a turning point for his career. In Dallas, he transitioned from a supporting player to a formidable point guard.
