He is widely recognized as the first great point guard in the NBA. A point guard is a player who directs the team's offense and manages the ball. Cousy changed the sport by introducing a fast, up-tempo style of play. Before his era, basketball was often a static game. Players moved slowly and took flat-footed shots. Cousy brought a streetball-like energy to the professional court. This new approach relied on speed, creativity, and high-level coordination.

Cousy's unique playing style relied on advanced ball-handling and passing skills.

He became famous for his behind-the-back dribbling. He also mastered the no-look pass, which allowed him to surprise both teammates and defenders. He was even capable of making difficult half-court passes. These skills made him the NBA assists leader for eight consecutive seasons. He was also the first player to reach major career milestones of 4,000, 5,000, and 6,000 assists. His nickname, "The Houdini of the Hardwood," reflected his ability to perform these magical moves.

His ability to use both hands was a vital part of his versatility.

When he was twelve years old, Cousy fell from a tree and broke his right hand. To continue playing, he had to learn to use his left hand. This injury made him effectively ambidextrous. He later described this accident as a "fortunate event" because it improved his skills. He eventually played for the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. During his college career, he was a three-time All-American. He led the Crusaders to the NCAA Tournament in both 1947 and 1950.

Cousy's professional career is most closely linked to the Boston Celtics. He played for the Celtics from 1950 to 1963. During this thirteen-year tenure, he helped the team win six NBA championships. In 1957, he was named the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was also selected as an NBA All-Star 13 times. Although the Celtics originally passed on drafting him, he became a central figure in their early dynasty. To honor his massive impact, the Celtics retired his number 14 jersey.

His jersey now hangs in the rafters of the Garden.

Cousy's impact extended beyond his physical play on the court. He was the first president of the National Basketball Players Association. He also served as a college basketball coach and an NBA head coach for the Cincinnati Royals. His leadership helped organize the professional interests of players. In 1971, he was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. This honor recognized his lasting contribution to the history of the game. His career demonstrated how individual skill can change the way an entire sport is played.

His legacy is confirmed by numerous historical selections by the NBA. Cousy was named to the NBA 25th Anniversary Team in 1971. He was also selected for the 35th Anniversary Team in 1981 and the 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996. Most notably, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021. He is one of only four players selected to all four of these anniversary teams. Of those four players, he is one of only two who are still alive. These honors show his enduring importance across many decades of basketball history.

Cousy's life also reflected the social changes of his time. Growing up in New York City during the Great Depression, he lived in a multicultural environment. He often played stickball with Black, Jewish, and other ethnic minority children. These early experiences helped instill a strong anti-racist sentiment in him. He later promoted these attitudes throughout his professional career. In 2019, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
