He is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of the National Basketball Association (NBA). West spent 14 years playing for the Los Angeles Lakers. His impact on the sport was so deep that his silhouette became the basis for the NBA logo. This earned him the famous nickname "the Logo." He was also known as "Mr. Clutch" for his ability to score during critical moments. One such moment occurred during the 1970 NBA Finals. He made a famous 60-foot buzzer-beating shot to tie a game against the New York Knicks.

West's journey to greatness began in Chelyan, West Virginia.

He grew up in a poor household with five siblings. His childhood involved significant personal struggles and grief. After his brother David died in the Korean War, West became a shy and introverted person. He spent much of his time practicing basketball. He would shoot baskets from every angle, even in mud or snow. This intense practice helped him become a star at East Bank High School. He was the first player from his state to score over 900 points in a single season.

His collegiate career at West Virginia University (WVU) showed his incredible skill.

During his junior year, he averaged 26.6 points and 12.3 rebounds per game. He led the Mountaineers to the 1959 NCAA championship game. Even though the team lost, West was named the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player. He also won a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic team in 1960. He served as a co-captain for that squad alongside Oscar Robertson. That Olympic team was later inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

As a professional guard, West redefined how players played the game.

He was often paired with forward Elgin Baylor. The media called them "Mr. Inside" and "Mr. Outside." Baylor played near the basket, while West, "Mr. Outside," was a deadly long-distance shooter. West was a master of the mid-range jump shot. This allowed him to score even under heavy defensive pressure. He was also a dominant defender. He was a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams ever created.

West's statistical achievements remain some of the highest in basketball history. He was elected to the NBA All-Star Team 14 times. In 1972, he won the All-Star MVP award. That same year, he won his only NBA championship title. He holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series at 46.3. In 1969, he achieved a unique feat. He was the only player in history named Finals MVP while playing for the losing team. These numbers prove his consistent excellence on the largest stages.

After retiring as a player in 1974, West transitioned into leadership roles.

He served as the head coach for the Lakers for three years. He then moved into management as a general manager. As the Lakers' general manager, he oversaw the team during a period where they won six championship rings. West also brought success to other teams. He helped the Memphis Grizzlies reach their first-ever playoff berths. He later served as a consultant for the Golden State Warriors. In that role, he helped the team win titles in 2015 and 2017.

Throughout his life, West received many of the highest honors in sports. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a player in 1980. He was later named to the NBA 35th Anniversary Team and the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. In 2021, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.
