Wade's journey to stardom began with a difficult childhood in Chicago, Illinois. He was born on January 17, 1982, to JoLinda and Dwyane Wade Sr. His parents separated when he was only four months old. Wade described his early years on the South Side of Chicago as "trying." His sister, Tragil, played a vital role in his development. She helped guide him toward sports like basketball and football. These activities helped him avoid the temptations of drugs and gangs. He grew up modeling his playing style after the famous Michael Jordan.

His athletic excellence became clear during his time at Harold L. Richards High School.
