They compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team is a member of the Atlantic Division within the Eastern Conference. Based in Boston, the team plays its home games at TD Garden. This arena is shared with the NHL's Boston Bruins. The Celtics are widely considered the most successful franchise in NBA history. They hold the record for the most championships won, with 18 titles. They also hold the record for the most total wins of any NBA franchise.

The team's identity is rooted in local culture and history. The name "Celtics" and the mascot, "Lucky the Leprechaun," honor Boston's large Irish population. The name also references the Original Celtics, a barnstorming basketball team from the early 20th century. The team's success is measured by its massive collection of trophies and individual honors. Forty-one members of the Basketball Hall of Fame have played for the Celtics. Additionally, Celtics players have won an NBA-record 10 Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. Four specific players—Bob Cousy, Bill Russell, Dave Cowens, and Larry Bird—earned this individual honor.

Success for the Celtics often began with strategic leadership and key acquisitions. In the early years, coach Red Auerbach managed almost every aspect of the team. He ran all practices and performed all scouting for both opponents and draft prospects. In 1956, Auerbach made a major move by acquiring Bill Russell. He achieved this through a complex negotiation with the Rochester Royals. The Celtics promised to send the Ice Capades to Rochester if the Royals allowed Russell to be the second overall pick. This acquisition became the cornerstone of a historic dynasty.

The Bill Russell era created the most dominant period in the franchise's history. Led by Russell, Bob Cousy, and Tom Heinsohn, the team won its first championship in 1957. From 1959 to 1966, the Celtics won eight consecutive NBA championships. This remains the longest championship streak in United States professional sports history. In 1964, the team also achieved a social milestone. They became the first NBA team to field an all-African-American starting lineup. This lineup included Willie Naulls, Tom "Satch" Sanders, K.C. Jones, Sam Jones, and Bill Russell.

Different eras of Celtics greatness have been defined by specific groups of players. In the mid-1970s, the team won titles in 1974 and 1976. This era featured Dave Cowens, John Havlicek, and Jo Jo White under coach Tom Heinsohn. The 1980s saw a return to dominance led by a group called the "Big Three." This group consisted of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish.

They won championships in 1981, 1984, and 1986. During this time, the team developed a famous rivalry with the Los Angeles Lakers. The two teams have met in the NBA Finals 12 times. The Celtics have defeated the Lakers nine times during these matchups.

The modern era of the Celtics has also been marked by championship success. In the 2007 offseason, the team built a new "Big Three" around captain Paul Pierce. They acquired Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to strengthen the roster. Under head coach Doc Rivers, the team won its 17th championship in 2008. After a period of rebuilding, the team drafted Jaylen Brown in 2016 and Jayson Tatum in 2017. Known as "The Jays," these players led the team to the NBA Finals in 2022. In 2024, the Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks to secure their 18th championship.

Beyond the court, the Celtics represent a massive financial asset in professional sports. In May 2025, the team was sold to investor William Chisholm. The sale price was $6.1 billion. This transaction was the highest valued sale for any sports franchise in North America at that time. However, the record was later surpassed when the Los Angeles Lakers were valued at approximately $10 billion. This makes the Celtics' sale the second-highest valued sports franchise transaction in United States history. The team remains a central figure in the economic and cultural landscape of professional basketball.
