Russell was a master of defensive mechanics. He used his tall stature and long arm span to block shots. Most players at the time were taught to stay flatfooted on defense. Russell broke this rule by jumping to make defensive plays. He studied opponents by memorizing their specific footwork. He even practiced in front of a mirror at night. This preparation helped him master man-to-man defense. He used his speed to guard much faster players.

His basketball journey included several distinct stages of success. First, he played college basketball for the San Francisco Dons. He led them to consecutive NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956. He also captained the U.S. national team to an Olympic gold medal in 1956. In the NBA, he became the defensive anchor for the Celtics. Later, he served as a player-coach from 1966 to 1969. He became the first Black NBA coach to win a championship. He also worked as a coach for the Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings.

Russell's early life was shaped by significant challenges. He was born in 1934 in West Monroe, Louisiana. During this time, the South was segregated. His family faced racism in their daily lives. His father once faced threats at a gas station. His mother was once told by a policeman to change her clothes. To find better opportunities, his family moved to Oakland, California. They faced poverty and lived in public housing. Russell also lost his mother when he was only 12 years old. These experiences helped him develop a strong character.

His statistical achievements are immense. Russell led the NBA in rebounding four times. He recorded 1,000 or more rebounds in twelve consecutive seasons. He ranks second all-time in both total rebounds and rebounds per game. He was a five-time NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was also a 12-time NBA All-Star. Russell was one of only eight players to achieve the Triple Crown in basketball. He was the first Black player to achieve superstar status in the NBA.

Many honors have been given to recognize his talent. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975. He received a second induction there in 2021 for his coaching. The NBA renamed the Finals MVP Award in his honor in 2009. In 2021, he was selected for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. His #6 jersey was retired league-wide by the NBA. This makes him the only player in NBA history to receive that specific honor.

Russell's influence extended into social and political spheres. He was a dedicated participant in the civil rights movement.
