He was known for making "message films." These were heavy dramas about important topics. Most big movie studios avoided these hard subjects. Kramer chose to face them instead. He wanted his movies to make people think about the world. He was a very independent person in Hollywood. This meant he often worked outside the big studio system.

Kramer learned about movies by doing many different jobs. During the Great Depression, he worked as a furniture mover on sets. He also worked as a film cutter. These jobs helped him learn the structure of a story. He learned how to edit scenes while he was filming them.

After the war, Kramer started his own company called Screen Plays Inc. He wanted to make films without studio control. This was a hard job because he had to find his own money. He had to ask banks or private investors for help. He competed with ninety-six other independent companies.
