Making a movie is a huge job with many steps. Preminger often took charge of every small detail on set. He was a perfectionist, which means he wanted everything to be exactly right. He was a very serious leader during the filming process. This helped him make films that looked and felt very specific.

Preminger's life began in a place called Bukovina. This area was part of Austria-Hungary in 1905. His parents were Josefa and Markus Preminger. When he was a young boy, his family had to flee because of a war. They moved to Graz, which is the capital of Styria. Later, his family moved to Vienna. In 1928, he earned a law degree from the University of Vienna. He was interested in acting even when he was a teenager. He loved to recite long speeches from famous plays.

His career in the theater started with a famous mentor. Max Reinhardt was a well-known director in Vienna. Preminger worked as an apprentice for him in 1924.

Preminger's films helped change what stories movies could tell. In the 1950s and 1960s, he made movies about topics that were often forbidden. He made films about things like drug addiction and different types of relationships. For example, he directed The Man with the Golden Arm in 1955. He also directed Anatomy of a Murder in 1959.
