It tells a grand story about a man who fights for freedom. The film is based on a 1951 novel by Howard Fast. It follows a Thracian slave named Spartacus who becomes a gladiator. A gladiator was a trained fighter in ancient Rome. After facing many hardships, Spartacus leads a huge rebellion against the Roman Republic. He wants to lead his people out of Italy to their homes. This story shows the strength of people fighting for their rights.

The movie follows several steps to show this struggle. It begins with Spartacus in a mining pit in the first century BC. He is later bought by a manager named Lentulus Batiatus for a gladiatorial school in Capua. Spartacus forms a bond with a woman named Varinia during this time. Eventually, a riot breaks out and the gladiators escape into the countryside. Spartacus is elected as their leader to organize them into a community. They even gather enough money to try to buy ships from pirates in Cilicia.

Making the film was a very big job with many changes. Kirk Douglas wanted to make this movie after missing a role in Ben-Hur. He used his own money through his company, Bryna Productions, to start the project. At first, Anthony Mann was the director. However, Douglas felt the director lost control of the movie after three weeks. Because of this, Stanley Kubrick took over as the new director. This was the only film Kubrick made where he did not have total artistic control.

There are many important names and facts connected to this production. The film stars Kirk Douglas as Spartacus and Laurence Olivier as the Roman Crassus. It also features Peter Ustinov, who won an Academy Award for his role. The movie was a massive success for Universal Studios. It was their highest-grossing film until the movie Airport came out in 1970. The film won four Academy Awards in total. These awards included Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

The history of the film is also tied to real American history. The writer, Dalton Trumbo, was part of the Hollywood Ten. This meant he was blacklisted and could not get work in the film industry. Kirk Douglas decided to publicly name Trumbo as the writer. This brave act helped end the blacklist in Hollywood. Even President John F. Kennedy helped by going to see the film. Today, the film is kept in the United States National Film Registry. This is because it is considered very important to culture and history.
